Town history

In Ancient Times

During the 2 nd century, the Romans came to Galicia, primarily motivated by economic purposes. The region was also a place where the Romans can have its strategic point and enlist the locals to join in its legion for military practices. In 62 BC, the pompous Roman dictator, Julius Caesar came to the city which was formerly known as Brigantium . He was in exploration to find a lucrative metal trade, establishing commerce with France, England and Portugal. At this time the town populace was made up of a small number of fishermen living in primordial circumstances.

The invaders took advantage of the strategic spot, and not long enough, the area played an imperative role with regard to sea commerce. The influence of the Romans was very noteworthy and it has encompassed all aspects of the life of the early inhabitants. The lasting Roman occupation had a lot to do with the language, religion, and other ways of life.
