Contemporary Times
Under Francisco Paulino Hermenegildo Teódulo Franco , Spain s Head of State from 1936 until his demise in 1975, the city experienced growth in all aspects. In the 1930's there were only 70,000 inhabitants. Nonetheless, due to latest industries coming to the city, the population in the 1950's increased to 130,000. Urban development was continuous, yet the growth was carried out in a rational way. This was the origin of city neighborhoods like Los Mallos, Agra do Orzán, Labañou and the Barrio de las Flores . All vanguard tendencies disappeared under Franco, not to be seen again until the 1960's.
La Coruna contains many historical artifacts that have been declared of national importance. The most famous being the Tower of Hercules , for it is the only working Roman lighthouse and a real symbol of the city.
