The cuisines offered by restaurants In Santiago de Compostela can cater to every taste bud as they prepare a sumptuous mix of traditional, elaborate and international cookery, of shellfish, meat, fish and even "tapas" or bar snacks served along with wines and other beverages.

The local gastronomy of Santiago has a very strong influence from the cuisine of the entire region of Galicia, reputable for its gourmet tradition in the whole of Spain. Most typical of the specialties include fish, which is found to possess extraordinary quality.

Among the distinct dishes of Santiago that are offered in many parts of the town are: Saint Jacob's Shell, Viera, a first rate specialty; the Pulpo á la Gallega, cuttlefish prepared with paprika and Empanada Gallega, a pie of fish, meat and vegetables with a distinct taste.

Santiago de Compostela is also known for courting the sweet tooth of its customers. Its most famous sweet is Tarta Compostelana, a delicious tart made of almonds. The wines of the region also have a great reputation too, particularly Ribeiro which is served young and fresh.
