Towns and cities

It is exciting to explore the neighborhood of this fantastic city, which is a mixture of the old and the new. To start with, the convents of Conxo or Belvís at the heart of the city take us back to historical times. The city itself abounds with historical monuments that survived the passage of time.

On the other hand, the contemporary folks reside in the many neighborhoods surrounding the city, such as the Fontiñas neighborhood that was created in the nineties. The place was entirely built from scratch. This is also where Area Central is located. An enormous mall with flats, shops and offices that is surely eye candy for the camera.

A series of new chic buildings also signify the increasingly modern times, with the evolution of art along with architecture. To exemplify this, there’s the Media Studies Faculty, the Auditorium of Galicia, the Congress Hall, the “Multiusos del Sar” stadium and the University Clinical Hospital.

However, Santiago de Compostela does not only stop its boasts with hard concrete, it also has a well preserved natural environment. The nearby Monte Pedroso can be seen from all over the city. In here, you can climb to its summit to enjoy an exceptional view of the city and its surrounding areas. This view would of course, involve the rivers Sar and Sarela and some old but beautiful small villages.

Many of Santiago’s towns and villages date back to the 9th century and ever since the 10th century, it has been a place for pilgrimage. The focus for the pilgrims is the grave of the Apostle St. James, situated in the city named after him, Santiago de Compostela. The interconnected footpaths and tracks used by the pilgrims over the centuries come together in Santiago. A cycling holiday in this popular place makes use of a combination of these tracks and of country roads. Moreover, the provinces of Asturias and Galicia have a rich variety of breathtaking landscapes, guaranteeing your trip to be an unforgettable one.
